The talent agency business is constantly evolving, and rigorous competition for clients in various sectors of the entertainment industry is at an all-time high. As a result, the need for strategic vision in the representation space is more important than ever and the opportunities for clients to enter new platforms and business lines are continuously developing. Jim Osborne, Chief Executive Officer of Independent Artist Group (IAG), built his career at talent agencies, rising from a traditional entry level role to become a leading agent, re-envisioning the models for content creation, and expanding clients’ success across a plethora of business channels and platforms.

Traditional Path with Exceptional Rise

Osborne came up the agency ranks as an assistant to famed talent agent Ed Limato at the renowned talent agency ICM, which represented Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, and Robert Downey Jr., among a multitude of other stars. Osborne credits Mr. Limato with the fundamentally bold, client-first leadership approach he has taken: looking at a 360-degree view of a client’s business, crossing them into both the platforms they want to pursue and those they didn’t know existed.

“Although it sounds obvious, it’s become a faded thought in many of our competitors’ minds,” Osborne adds, noting that complacency is the antithesis to forward-thinking representation in the modern media landscape.

In 2022, Osborne was President of APA, a storied talent agency founded in 1962 that was making plans for growth to take advantage of industry opportunities created through industry disruption. Osborne and the talent agency had arrived at this juncture thanks to the strategic partnership he had established with investor Ron Burkle of The Yucaipa Companies. Burkle and his family office recognized the underlying strength of APA and provided capital to the talent agency during the recent industry shutdown. With the capital in place, Osborne turned to Cathie Wachter, now Senior Vice President and West Coast Managing Group Director at Sunflower Bank.

Building a Creative and Strategic Financial Partnership

Osborne credits Wachter as a “true partner” from the ideation through execution of the 2023 merger that joined APA and Artist Group International (AGI) - a leading music touring agency - to form IAG, as well as in the rapid growth and “signing streak” that IAG has experienced since, through the recruitment of dozens of agents and the signing of key clients as the newly consolidated agency.

When Wachter joined Sunflower Bank in April 2024, she and the Sunflower Bank leadership and credit teams were committed to ensuring that IAG would continue to receive the financial partnership needed to maintain continued success. When the IAG team approached Wachter to move its existing financing, within just a few weeks Sunflower Bank’s credit team was able to favorably restructure IAG’s existing loan to include a working capital line of credit to support future growth. The complete relationship now also includes commercial banking and treasury management account solutions.

“My longstanding relationship with Jim and the IAG team has been built on mutual trust, ongoing communication with the IAG leadership, and my deep understanding of the entertainment industry. This has led to our Sunflower Bank team’s proven success in proactively managing the agency’s banking and credit needs by thinking outside the box. We combine strategic insight with industry expertise to consistently deliver impactful results for our clients,” Wachter says.

Osborne recounts Sunflower Bank CEO and President Neal Arnold’s flight to Los Angeles to meet Osborne and his senior leadership team for the first time as the type of unwavering tenacity, bold drive and client-first philosophy that is also reflected in IAG’s approach to representation.

“As we take the agency to the next phase of our growth, the hands-on involvement of Sunflower Bank’s leadership, their belief in our vision, and our shared approach for moving the agency forward are essential to the agency we see ourselves becoming,” Osborne says.

Osborne’s chief lieutenant at IAG is Kyle Loftus, who works closely with Osborne on day-to-day operations, and was recently and formally promoted to the role of President of the agency.

“The growth we envisioned in the earlier stages of my time here has been made possible by our partnership with Sunflower Bank — their accessibility around the clock, tethered with their tenacity and strategic approach, are hallmarks we strive for daily at IAG,” Loftus added.

Taking the Talent and Entertainment Industry to the Next Level

Both Osborne and Loftus identify a singular element that excites them daily: the ability to witness IAG’s impact on the arts and culture.

“We have a genuine hands-on, familial relationship with our clients – a focus on taking true stars and increasingly moving them into new avenues,” Osborne said, citing longtime client 50 Cent, who moved from music to production company steward and true multi-hyphenate, bolstering a resume that includes 32 series sold in the television business, with nine currently on air.

“Every day presents new challenges, but those challenges become opportunities, and turning those opportunities into multi-channel opportunities is a way to consistently iterate for our clients to deliver exceptional service across the board,” he added.

IAG often makes Sunflower Bank a first call for strategic counsel and advice, due to its nuanced understanding of the ever-evolving entertainment business and Wachter and team’s advanced edge ahead of competitors.

“In the rapidly evolving entertainment landscape, Cathie and the West Los Angeles Commercial Banking team’s office puts them at the center of the entertainment industry, supporting their local neighbors with the resources of a strong and growing national bank. As a direct result of our strategic growth, we’ve been able to sign and retain top-tier talent across music, film, television, and other verticals. That strategic growth is a direct result of our extraordinary relationship with Sunflower Bank, which takes one plus one and truly makes it three,” Osborne added.
